How many enzymes should a laundry detergent have?

Each enzyme class breaks down one category of soil, so more classes means more stain types actually removed rather than redistributed. Most natural detergents contain one or two. Alpiniå Labs uses six: protease, amylase, lipase, mannanase, pectate-lyase, and cellulase.

What is the best natural laundry detergent for hard water?

Look for one with a built-in chelator such as sodium gluconate or sodium citrate, which binds calcium and magnesium so the cleaning agents can actually work. Alpiniå Labs includes sodium gluconate in the base formula at standard dosing — no booster, no adjustment needed in hard-water areas.

What's the difference between the scents?

Only the fragrance. Unscented, Florida Jasmine, Orange Blossom, Woodsage Sea Salt, and Pure Lemon all use the identical six-enzyme cleaning formula. Every scented version uses a terpene-based botanical fragrance, paraben- and phthalate-free. Unscented contains no fragrance component at all.

Does this laundry detergent contain microplastics?

No. It's a loose concentrated powder — no PVA film, no pods, no dissolvable sheets. Laundry pods and sheets commonly use polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film, which does not reliably fully biodegrade in wastewater treatment.

Is it safe for HE and front-loading machines?

Yes. It's a low-foam formula, suitable for HE and front-loaders as well as standard top-loaders — and it's cold-water safe.

Does it work in cold water?

Yes. The blend includes pectate-lyase, an enzyme that stays notably active at low temperatures — where many enzymes underperform.

Does it contain optical brighteners?

No. Optical brighteners are fluorescent dyes that stay on fabric and make it appear whiter under light without removing anything. We use cellulase instead — it lifts plant residue and smooths pilled fibers, so brightness comes from actually removing what's dulling the fabric.

How much detergent should I use per load?

One tablespoon for a regular load, 1.5 for a large load, 2 for heavy soil. No increase needed for hard water. The 20 oz size gives roughly 40 washes; 5 lb about 160; 10 lb about 320.

Is it safe for sensitive skin?

It's formulated without SLS, SLES, dyes, optical brighteners, synthetic fragrance, phthalates, and parabens — the residues most commonly associated with laundry-related skin irritation. The Unscented variant has no fragrance component and is the most conservative choice.
