What Grandma Knew About Laundry—and What Modern Science Added
The familiar ingredients that built generations of laundry routines, paired with cleaning technology they never had.
Before laundry pods, fragrance boosters and oversized bottles of liquid detergent, the laundry shelf looked very different.
There might have been a box of washing soda, a container of borax, baking soda and a bar of real soap. These were straightforward household staples, each kept for a reason and used with knowledge often passed from one generation to the next.
Grandma probably wasn't talking about surfactant systems, oxygen activators or enzyme classes.
But she understood something we still believe at Alpiniå:

When we formulated our Laundry Detergent Powder, we didn't want to throw all of that old household wisdom away.
We wanted to build on it.
Before pods, there was powder.
Powder laundry products aren't new. In fact, several of the ingredients you'll find in our laundry formula would have looked perfectly at home on an old-fashioned laundry shelf.
Washing Soda
Also known as sodium carbonate, washing soda has been a household laundry staple for generations.
Its alkalinity helps create conditions that support cleaning and the removal of greasy and stubborn soils. It's simple, effective chemistry—and there's a reason it has stuck around.
Borax
If there was an old laundry shelf in the house, there's a good chance borax wasn't far away.
Borax became a familiar wash-day addition and has long been used as part of laundry routines, particularly when dealing with difficult soils and water conditions.
It's one of those ingredients that immediately feels old-school.
And we still use it.
Baking Soda
Sodium bicarbonate might be one of the most recognizable ingredients in traditional homekeeping.
It found its way into kitchens, refrigerators, cleaning cabinets and laundry rooms, where generations of households used it as part of their washing and freshening routines.
Real Soap
Long before the modern detergent aisle existed, there was soap.
Soap made from oils and fats has been used to wash textiles for centuries. Our formula includes saponified coconut oil, bringing a familiar cleaning ingredient into a much more sophisticated modern detergent system.
Some ingredients become classics for a reason.
But that's only the beginning of our formula.

What Grandma Didn't Have: Six Enzymes
This is where the old laundry room meets the modern lab.
Traditional ingredients can provide an excellent foundation, but today's laundry brings a huge variety of soils into the washing machine.
Think body oils, sweat, makeup, cooking oils, pasta sauce, fruit, dairy, grass, baby food and everything that ends up on workout clothes.
One ingredient isn't particularly good at handling every one of those things.
That's where enzymes get interesting.
Our Laundry Detergent Powder uses six targeted enzymes, each selected to help tackle a different category of everyday soil.
Protease
Protease targets proteins, making it useful for protein-containing stains and soils such as blood, dairy and certain body soils.
Amylase
Amylase breaks down starches—the kind of residue that can come from pasta, potatoes, rice, sauces and other foods.
Lipase
Lipase targets fats and oils, helping with greasy food stains, cooking oils and oily body soils.
Mannanase
Mannanase helps break down certain gums and food thickeners that can be surprisingly stubborn in the wash.
Pectate Lyase
Pectate lyase targets pectin-containing soils associated with fruits and vegetables.
Cellulase
Cellulase works on cellulose-related material and is commonly used in modern laundry formulations as part of fabric appearance and cleaning systems.
Six enzymes.
Six different jobs.
Because the residue from last night's dinner isn't the same as the soil on a shirt collar—and neither is the same as the strawberry that ended up on a white T-shirt.
Different mess. Different enzyme.
We think Grandma would have appreciated that.
Then We Added Oxygen Power
There's another piece of modern laundry chemistry hiding inside the bag.
Sodium percarbonate releases oxygen-based cleaning agents when it dissolves in the wash.
We pair it with TAED, an activator that helps oxygen-based bleaching systems perform effectively at lower washing temperatures.
That's particularly useful today, when many households routinely wash clothes in cool or cold water.
So one scoop of Alpiniå isn't simply a mixture of old-fashioned household powders.
It's a formulated cleaning system combining:

Hard Water Changes the Way Detergent Works
Grandma knew water mattered—even if she wasn't describing it as water chemistry.
Water can contain minerals such as calcium and magnesium. In hard-water areas, those minerals can interfere with the performance of a cleaning system.
That's one reason our formula also includes sodium gluconate, which helps manage minerals in the wash water as part of the overall detergent system.
It's also a good example of why simply reading an ingredient list doesn't tell you everything about a cleaning product.
Formulation matters.
Which ingredients are included matters.
How much of each ingredient is included matters.
And, perhaps most importantly, how those ingredients work together matters.
Is It Soap or Detergent?
This distinction comes up frequently with powdered laundry products.
Our formula contains saponified coconut oil, but that doesn't mean the finished product is simply “laundry soap.”
The formula needs to be considered as a whole.

For us, going back to powder wasn't about rejecting modern laundry science.
It was almost the opposite.
Powder gives us a format where we can bring traditional dry laundry ingredients together with modern cleaning technology without starting with a bottle of water.
It also puts the dose back in your hands.
Instead of a predetermined pod, you can measure the amount appropriate for the load you're washing.
It's an old-school format that makes a lot of sense for a modern detergent.
And there's something we like about that.

We don't think modern homekeeping requires choosing between everything our grandmothers knew and everything modern chemistry has taught us.
There was a lot of wisdom in the old laundry room.
